Overview of the First Women in Healthcare Network Conference
On November 1st, the inaugural Women in Healthcare Network (WIHCN) conference took place at the Continental Hotel, Lagos, with the theme “Resilience in Healthcare.”
It was a truly impactful event, filled with insightful lectures, engaging panel sessions, and excellent networking opportunities, all in a beautifully crafted ambiance. We addressed crucial topics such as improving healthcare accessibility, the power of early detection, and the critical need to financially support women’s health initiatives.
Since the network’s launch on January 31st, 2024, with its remarkable founding members and board of trustees, WIHCN has hosted a series of successful programs, culminating in this landmark event. The conference featured inspiring and credible speakers who shared their journeys and expertise with close to 400 attendees.
We were honored by the presence of Her Excellency Bamidele Abiodun, First Lady of Ogun State, and received a goodwill message from Her Excellency Dr. (Mrs.) Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, First Lady of Lagos State, which was delivered by Mrs. Enyiayewun. The Hon. Commissioner for Health in Lagos State, Professor Akin Abayomi, also graced the occasion.
Our keynote speaker, Professor Ijeoma Uchegbu, President of WOLFSON College, University of Cambridge, shared a powerful story of resilience and determination in her address titled “From Homelessness to Head of House.” Her journey resonated deeply with the audience.
Guest lecturer, Professor Abubakar Bello, President of the African Organization for Research and Training in Cancer (AORTIC), highlighted the importance of cancer screening programs for improving women’s health. He emphasized how regular screenings can save lives, underscoring this with current statistics.
Following the lectures, Dr. Tomi Coker, Commissioner for Health, Ogun State, officially launched the WIHCN project focused on establishing Women’s Health Clinics across Nigeria, starting with breast and cervical cancer screening programs in states led by female Commissioners for Health.
The event featured three insightful panel sessions:
1.The first, “Trials and Tribulations of Rising to the Top,” moderated by Dr. Modupe Elebute-Odunsi, included panelists Dr. Gloria Rowland, Dr. Bola Owolabi, and Dr. Nnenna Osuji, who shared their experiences of resilience and success in healthcare leadership.
2.The second panel, “Money Matters for Women in Healthcare,” anchored by Mrs. Hansatu Adegbite, with panelists Mrs. Chioma Obaro, Mrs. Ademola Adeoye, and Mrs. Bukola Oshikomaiya, provided practical financial advice and explored funding opportunities for healthcare professionals.
3.The final session, “What My Eyes Have Seen,” was led by Dr. Kemi Ogunyemi and featured Mrs. Bukola Cole, Mrs. Nike Onifade, and Dr. Ngozi Onyia. This heartfelt discussion revealed personal stories of challenges and triumphs encountered throughout their careers.
To conclude the event, a prize-giving ceremony took place, with Aero Contractors flight tickets awarded to members who successfully referred the most participants to the conference. Congratulations to:
- Dr. Ime Okon
- Ms. Ilori Rachael
- Ms. Adenike Onifade
We also recognized and celebrated exceptional women in healthcare with prestigious awards for their outstanding contributions.
